Chainsaw Man: Story, Characters & Why It Became a Global Phenomenon – 2026
Chainsaw Man is unlike anything that came before it. Created by Tatsuki Fujimoto and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 2018, it arrived with no grand heroic premise, no chosen one narrative, and no clear moral compass. What it offered instead was something far more unsettling and more honest: a story about a boy who just wants to eat a decent meal and live a normal life — and the catastrophically violent world that makes that almost impossible.

The World of Devil Hunters
In the world of Chainsaw Man, Devils are born from humanity's fears. The more people fear something — death, darkness, chainsaws — the more powerful the Devil born from that fear becomes. Devils roam the world causing destruction, and it falls to Devil Hunters, employed by Public Safety, to eliminate them.
Some humans form contracts with Devils, gaining their powers in exchange for a price — usually something irreversible. Others, called Fiends, have had their bodies taken over by Devils entirely. And then there are Hybrids — humans who have fused with a Devil and can transform partially into one.
Denji: The Most Unlikely Hero
Denji is the protagonist of Chainsaw Man — and one of the most refreshingly unconventional heroes in modern manga. Orphaned young and left with his father's enormous debt to the Yakuza, Denji survives by hunting low-level Devils with his pet Devil-dog Pochita, who has the power of a chainsaw.
When the Yakuza betrays and kills Denji, Pochita merges with him — giving him the power to sprout chainsaws from his head and arms by pulling the cord in his chest. Denji is reborn as Chainsaw Man: unkillable, chainsaw-powered, and motivated almost entirely by very basic desires — food, warmth, and human connection.
Power, Aki, and Makima
Power
Power is a Blood Fiend — a Devil who has taken over a human body — and the most chaotic, hilarious, and surprisingly touching character in the series. Selfish, violent, and completely unpredictable, she becomes one of Denji's closest companions in a way neither of them fully understands.
Aki Hayakawa
The serious, disciplined counterpart to Denji and Power, Aki is a Devil Hunter driven by revenge. His arc is one of the most tragic in the series, subverting every expectation the reader might have about the "stoic cool guy" archetype.
Makima
Makima is one of the most fascinating and terrifying antagonists in recent manga history. Cool, enigmatic, and apparently all-powerful, her true nature and motivations are among the most talked-about reveals in modern manga.
Part 1 vs Part 2
Chainsaw Man is currently in its second part, focusing on a new protagonist named Asa Mitaka and a new Devil — the War Devil Yoru. Part 2 has a noticeably different tone from Part 1: more grounded, more focused on high school life and relationships, before inevitably descending into the chaos that defines Fujimoto's work.
The MAPPA Anime
The 2022 anime adaptation by Studio MAPPA was one of the most anticipated of the decade. It delivered — the animation quality, especially in the fight sequences, was extraordinary. The adaptation faithfully covered the first arc of Part 1 and a second season is confirmed.
