16:9 vs 9:16 vs 1:1 vs 21:9 — Choosing the Right Aspect Ratio for AI Video

Aspect ratio is the decision most creators make last and should make first. A shot composed for widescreen never quite works cropped to vertical — the framing is baked in by export time.

Here's how to choose deliberately, and why it belongs at the start of your prompt.

The four formats and what they're for

• 16:9 — widescreen. YouTube and cinematic web. Room for wide establishing shots and horizontal movement.
• 9:16 — vertical. TikTok, Reels, Shorts. Not 16:9 sideways — subjects sit higher, movement is vertical, busy wide shots fall apart.
• 1:1 — square. The feed format. Forgiving for centered subjects, bad for horizontal sweep.
• 21:9 — ultra-wide. The cinematic anamorphic look. Letterboxed, epic, landscape-driven.

Why the ratio changes the shot, not just the crop

A wide shot of a character on a rooftop reads as environment in 16:9 — the city is the point. The same subject in 9:16 becomes character — the vertical frame pushes the city out and the person in. Same scene, different story, purely from the frame. This is why cropping in post fails: you composed for the wrong story.

Decide your platform, set your ratio, and append it to every prompt. Producing for several platforms? Produce the same shot in each ratio deliberately rather than cropping one into the others.
